We’ve all heard the phrase “Building a new mouse trap” but what about building a new donut? The donut has been in America since the 1800’s. There are cake donuts, round donuts, long éclair donuts, frosted, sprinkled and glazed. Nothing has really changed much with the donut.
Well, that is until a small little donut shop in the Silicon Valley decided to turn eating a donut into a social event.
Psycho Donuts has not only revamped the taste, look and appeal of a donut, they are creating a themed environment for people to hang out, socialize and debate the fate of their favorite donut. The folks at Psycho see their donuts as being a fun and crazy redesign of an old fashioned American tradition. The shop dedicated to bringing the “Donut Craziness” out of all of us.
It’s more than a donut shop it’s like the social hub for the donut world. It’s one part art gallery and one part donut shop. You can munch and mingle and enjoy art from very creative local artist. Themed donuts include the cookie monster, maniac malt, smores etc.
Sounds innocent, right?
Well, there are numerous mental health groups and individuals that are protesting the shop, their donuts and their “Psycho theme”.
Although, I could do without the padded mini cell, I’m not offended by the shop theme or the donuts. In fact, it is one of the few places that I’ve seen during the current economy that has been born out of creativity and taking risk.
People are demanding that the shop change their name, theme and donut names. I think there are far more things to protest than the fate of a donut. We are talking about donuts, people. I applaud the founders of Psycho Donuts for creating a new product that people want and are willing to standing in line for an hour to get a taste. In fact, the second time I went was just to speak to the customers and protesters. Everyone was there for a different reason from protesting sugar, mental illness, buying artwork or just plain breakfast treat.
The Silicon Valley has long been known for its constant innovation and now we can add reinventing the donut to the list.
